PlayNow and How It All Started
PlayNow.com is the single legal, regulated online gambling site that operates in British Columbia. It is owned by the British Columbia Lottery Corporation, a provincial Crown corporation that has been managing gambling for the province since 1985. Profits do not go overseas - all net revenue is returned to provincial purposes and public programs.
The platform hosts casino games, lottery products, sports betting and bingo. Access is restricted to players who are physically inside British Columbia at the moment they play, so using it while you are out of province is not allowed.
Oversight is handled by the Independent Gambling Control Office. This body is responsible for regulatory integrity, investigations and enforcement across all gambling channels in the province. The legal minimum age is 19 for every gambling product, whether that is an online slot on PlayNow or a table on a casino floor.
BCLC itself has described PlayNow as the first website in North America to provide legal, regulated online casino games. That claim appears in official provincial documents and has been repeated over the years without much debate from other sources.
What’s Actually on the Platform
The line-up on PlayNow is broader than some players first assume. The casino section covers slots, poker, baccarat, roulette and blackjack. Lottery draws run alongside online bingo games. Sports betting lets players wager on single events, series, fights and races, while horse racing sits outside this platform.
| Product Category | Examples |
|---|---|
| Casino | Slots, Poker, Baccarat, Roulette, Blackjack |
| Sports Betting | Individual events, Series, Fights |
| Lottery | Provincial lottery products |
| Bingo | Online bingo rooms |
Live casino tables are provided through a partnership with Evolution Gaming, which supplies the live-dealer studios and software. In practice, this is where a lot of more experienced players eventually end up spending time. The interface has a different feel, and the tempo at the tables is not quite the same as standard RNG games.
Getting Started on PlayNow
Creating an account follows a fairly typical pattern for a regulated site. A player goes to playnow.com, clicks on the sign-up option, and enters basic details like full name, date of birth and a residential address in British Columbia. There is a confirmation that the player is at least 19, and an identity check to complete. Once that is done, the account is active.
From the home page, the Casino section is available from the main navigation. A player chooses a game category, scrolls through the titles and then launches one to begin play.
Sports betting follows its own flow after login. It usually looks something like this:
- Select Sports Betting from the top navigation bar.
- Browse the schedule by sport or by date.
- Open a specific event and pick a wager type.
- Enter a stake in Canadian dollars.
- Check the bet slip, including odds and selections.
- Confirm the bet, then track it in My Bets or account history.
Behind the scenes, betting activity is monitored for unusual patterns or suspicious transactions. This is tied to provincial anti-money-laundering requirements, not just a platform preference. Buy-in levels or behaviour that stands out can be reviewed. Most regular customers never really see that process, but it runs in the background.
There is one practical habit that generally helps anywhere: before jumping into games or placing wagers, spending a few minutes in the account settings. Deposit limits, play-time reminders, notifications and self-management tools are easier to set up at the start than in the middle of a long session.
The Corporation Behind It
BCLC was created in 1985 with a clear role: to conduct and manage commercial gambling on behalf of the Province of British Columbia. Legal sports betting under BCLC arrived in 1991, well before internet play existed in any meaningful way. When online gambling became technically realistic, BCLC moved into that space by building and launching PlayNow.
| Milestone | Detail |
|---|---|
| 1985 | BCLC established as a Crown corporation |
| 1991 | Legal sports betting introduced in British Columbia |
| PlayNow launch | First legal online casino in North America per BCLC |
| Live casino added | Partnership with Evolution Gaming |
| Cascades Casino Delta | New physical venue developed with Gateway Casinos |
BCLC does not usually run physical casino properties itself. Instead, private-sector service providers such as Gateway Casinos and Entertainment Limited take care of daily operations at many locations. To do that, they must be registered with the provincial regulator and operate within BCLC rules and standards.
The public corporation sets requirements, oversees equipment and monitors compliance, while the private partners handle staffing, customer service and the on-site experience.
Land-Based Side of Things
Across British Columbia there are 36 casinos and a single bingo hall, located in 33 different communities. Most of these properties do not only offer gambling - they mix slot floors and tables with restaurants, bars or live shows.
The Gaming Control Act is the main piece of legislation behind this system. It supports both land-based venues and online platforms, keeping them under a shared legal structure.
Regulatory oversight and enforcement remain with the Independent Gambling Control Office. Some provincial references also mention the Gaming Policy and Enforcement Branch, particularly when it comes to registration of service providers. Because of this layered set-up, understanding which office handles which piece of the puzzle can feel slightly complicated at first glance.
